Photo of drowned migrants sparks criticism

A heart-rending photograph of a Salvadoran man and his almost two-year-old daughter drowned in the Rio Grande River fuelled angry denunciations on Wednesday of the Trump administration's immigration policies.

Oscar Alberto Martinez Ramirez, was frustrated because the family from El Salvador was unable to present themselves to US authorities and request asylum.

Taking the final decision to try his fate in the United States, April 3, the family moved from El Salvador to Mexico.

Leaders of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops echoed the pope's grief and said the image of the drowned father and daughter demand action.

But the Trump administration has implemented a border-wide policy that limits the number of asylum applications a border crossing accepts each day.

Their critiques echoed USA asylum officers who have said that MPP was contrary to America's "moral fabric".

"I know it could stop immediately if the Democrats change the law".

A series of haunting photographs showing the young father and child lying face-down in water have stirred anger in El Salvador and Mexico, where the government had faced sharp criticism for its treatment of migrants.

"Recent reports of overcrowded and unsanitary conditions are appalling and unacceptable for any person in US custody, but particularly for children, who are uniquely vulnerable", they said.

MPP was instituted amid the increase of migrants from Central America.

In the Western Hemisphere, many from Central America, including El Salvador, are fleeing the region's rampant gang violence and astounding levels of poverty in hopes of receiving asylum in the U.S.

At least 283 migrants died while attempting to cross the U.S. -Mexico border a year ago, according to U.S. border patrol. Officials say the system is overwhelmed.

Vatican News reported that dozens of people have died this year attempting to cross the Rio Grande.

Authorities stand behind yellow warning tape along the Rio Grande where the bodies were found.

When their bodies were discovered, they had reached the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, near Matamoros, across the river from Brownsville.

Many migrant shelters are overflowing on the Mexican side.

Since taking office in 2017, Trump has sought to make it more hard for all immigrants, including those seeking political asylum, to reach the U.S. Along with metering and a short-lived policy that resulted in thousands of migrant children being separated from their families last year, his administration has in the first six months of this year sent more than 17,000 asylum-seekers to Mexico to wait for their cases to be heard.

"In Less than four years after (Kurdi's death), we are once again confronted with powerful visual evidence of people dying during their unsafe journeys across borders, " the Head of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, said in a statement. Tania was rescued by a person nearby, she told La Jornada. Both were face down, with Valeria's arm clutching her father's neck.

Pope Francis expressed great sorrow upon viewing the image, said the Vatican, whose newspaper published the photograph on its front page.

The United Nations refugee agency said the photo from the U.S. border represents "a failure to address the violence and desperation pushing people to take journeys of danger".

Kurdi was part of a Syrian refugee wave that caused panic in Europe, prompting Turkey to effectively shut down the migrant route through Greece at the European Union's behest.

Reaction to the image of the father and daughter was on the lips of everyone on Capitol Hill.

The family had tried to cross the Rio Grande river to enter the US. They are likely to wait in Mexico for around two years because of a backlog in USA immigration courts. So the family chose to cross the border illegally, not to wait - a decision that eventually led to their death. "I don't must gaze one more describe admire that on the USA border". Most of those deaths go largely unnoticed in the United States.

The US has also been expanding its programme under which asylum seekers wait in Mexico while their claims are processed in American courts, in a wait that could last many months or even years. They said that frustrates families, spurring them to cross illegally.

President Donald Trump has blamed his rival Democratic Party for the deaths of two migrants on the US-Mexico border, which were captured in a "heartbreaking" photo earlier this week.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said Martinez and his daughter had lost their lives because they could not get the protection they were entitled to under global law. According to mother of women, they do not suffer from violence in the country and haven't seen him, but desperately sought a better life and higher earnings.
