Met Office warning of thunderstorms hitting Wales

It warned train and bus services may be delayed or cancelled, driving conditions will be hard and roads could be closed due to flooding.

Tuesday will see a bright start for many, but all of the United Kingdom will have some heavy and thundery downpours during the day.

The warning is in place from 3am this morning until midnight tonight, and continues into tomorrow.

Up to a month's worth of rain could fall in three hours today as Britain is hit by a series of thunderstorms.

The whole of Wales is covered by a Met Office yellow "be aware" warning from 03:00 BST to 23:59. In Preston, Lancashire, fire crews were called to rescue two people from the River Ribble at 4pm on Sunday.

In its detailed forecast for Tuesday, it added: "Thunderstorms and outbreaks of heavy rain will arrive across the far southwest early on Tuesday and then spread further northeast across England and Wales whilst also increasing in frequency during the day".

The Met Office said, "Thunderstorms and heavy showers are expected to develop across northwest Scotland this afternoon perhaps causing travel disruption".

"In a few places these thunderstorms could produce 30 mm of rainfall in an hour and 40 to 50 mm in a few hours".

"It will remain unsettled through Tuesday and Wednesday with the risk of heavy and thundery showers, interspersed with brighter spells. That's quite a lot of rain flowing in quite a short period of time".

Up to 50mm (2ins) of rain could fall in three hours across parts of the West Midlands making for potentially hard driving conditions.
