Canada’s Andreescu stuns Pliskova to reach Toronto semis

Andreescu began the year at No. 107 and skyrocketed up the standings thanks to a fantastic start to the season - which included her first WTA title at Indian Wells in March. "I know her game".

After a dominant first set Andreescu struggled with her injury, needing a medical timeout in the second set before digging deep for the victory. The Czech native could reclaim the No. 1 spot this week with a good run at the US$2.83 million WTA Tour Premier 5 event.

Pliskova was absolutely annihilated in the opening set, a deer-caught-in-the-headlights with Andreescu's crafty point construction working wonders.

Earlier, Kenin upset sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 7-6 (2), 6-4. Kenin won 61 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her five break points. The 19-year-old's only losses in the deciding set this year have been to Julia Goerges in Auckland, Anastasija Sevastova at the Australian Open and Sofia Kenin in Acapulco.

"Being able to accomplish what I've accomplished and knowing that a lot of these young athletes are watching is something really special", said Andreescu, who remembers being spellbound watching Belinda Bencic's epic title run here in 2015 as a fan.

Andreescu had been battling injuries and inconsistent form in recent months but has looked rejuvenated in front of the home crowd and showed plenty of fighting spirit with each of her four matches going the distance. Andreescu has won seven of her last eight matches on hard court. "I didn't feel 100 per cent ready for the tournament because I had a long break (after Wimbledon). It was a bit sore, but I think it got a little bit worse during the match", Andreescu said.

She came jogging back out with a wrap around her right leg and tape on her left inner thigh.

Andreescu, from nearby Mississauga, Ont., defeated third-seeded Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 in a dramatic match on Friday afternoon.

Pliskova beat Kontaveit in two sets after taking three against American Alison Riske on Wednesday. "It's nice to get back in the rhythm of things", Andreescu said. I go into every match thinking I can do it, but sometimes that doesn't happen.

Andreescu screamed as she tied the third set 3-3, but Pliskova fired two aces for the final two points of the seventh game to retake the lead.

Playing her first event since losing the Wimbledon final, Williams will face Czech qualifier Marie Bouzkova on Saturday (Sunday AEST).

Unlike at Flushing Meadows previous year, where Osaka won her first Grand Slam title, there were no fiery exchanges with the umpire, no smashed rackets, no point or game penalties - just a rock-solid performance from Williams.

Wimbledon champion Simona Halep of Romania played Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russian Federation later Thursday.
