First Trailer For Sam Mendes' 1917

First Trailer For Sam Mendes' 1917

Here is the first trailer for 1917, a drama from Spectre and Skyfall director Sam Mendes about the Great War - one of the deadliest conflicts in human history that was expected to be "the war to end all wars".

Assembling a cast that also includes Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, Andrew Scott and Daniel Mays, 1917 finds Mendes digging into trench warfare the awful toll taken by conflict.

A group of British soldiers is about to walk into a trap, but there's a chance to save them.

The movie reunites Mendes with cinematographer Roger Deakins, marking their fourth collaboration following Jarhead, Revolutionary Road, and Skyfall. What a trailer. This looks even better than I was expecting.

The footage reveals that the story will follow English Tommy Lieutenant Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) and his friend Schofield (George MacKay) as they're sent on an important mission by their commanding officer, played by Colin Firth. The war movie takes place over the course of one day, following soldiers on a "seemingly impossible mission" to deliver a message across enemy lines to stop an attack that will kill their own soldiers. We're getting right in the trenches with the characters, and you can feel the claustrophobia and fear coming in at the edges.

Universal Pictures will release 1917 in limited release on December 25, 2019 and wide on January 10, 2020.
