Joshua-Ruiz rematch set for Saudi Arabia

Joshua-Ruiz rematch set for Saudi Arabia

After weeks and months of deliberation as to when and where the rematch will take place, Eddie Hearn and Joshua made the announcement on social media.

As Joshua mentioned in his post above, the fight will take place on neutral ground in Saudi Arabia.

According to Mike Coppinger of The Athletic, the fight will take place in an open-air stadium being constructed for the fight. He was making his US debut and many fans had traveled from the Madison Square Garden to see him fight. Although the Englishman was a -2000 favorite, it was Ruiz Jr. who pulled off one of the biggest upsets ever as he won by knockout in the seventh round.

Joshua (22-1, 21 KOs) also informed Smith that the date and venue for their immediate rematch will be revealed soon.

England's Joshua (22-1, 21 KOs), 29, was torn between having the rematch on his turf in the United Kingdom or returning to NY to seek revenge in the same ring where he got knocked down four times and suffered his first loss by seventh-round knockout in his United States debut. The exact titles the Englishman lost to Ruiz back in June.

In June, Ruiz Jr sent Joshua to the canvas twice in the third round, dazing the champion. His lone loss came at the hands of Joseph Parker back in 2016.

In the previous year, Saudi Arabia has hosted the World Boxing Super Series super-middleweight tournament final between Callum Smith and George Groves, along with Amir Khan's win over Australian Billy Dib last month. "If Anthony Joshua fights Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia, it's likely to be yet another opportunity for the Saudi authorities to try to "sportswash" their severely tarnished image", he said.
