LeBron James isn't the same anymore about winning, National Basketball Association team executive says

The former Cleveland Cavaliers general manager told Sports Illustrated he was "miserable" trying to build a roster around the National Basketball Association superstar and questioned whether James is more focused on off-court priorities than helping the Lakers win.

Griffin spoke with a person close to James after the Sports Illustrated article came out and said his comments were missing some context, sources told ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

Griffin also addressed his comment that James wasn't "the same animal anymore" after winning a championship with the Cavaliers in 2016.

In addition to the comment reported by ESPN.com, James appeared to fire off a tweet about Griffin's comments.

Former NBA center Kendrick Perkins, who played with James in Cleveland in 2014-15 when Griffin was the general manager (and in 2017-18 when Griffin no longer worked for the team), suggested Griffin should direct his disappointment at Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, not James.

Griffin, who is now running the New Orleans Pelicans, touched on how hard the culture in Cleveland was largely due to the pressure of needing to bring James a championship.

Now with the Pelicans, Griffin has to worry first and foremost about his franchise. "I was miserable", Griffin says.

On ESPN's The Jump on Friday, Griffin said he did a poor job of framing a conversation about dealing with the "noise" surrounding those teams. "There was no way I was gonna stay for any amount of money".

This isn't the first time that James' desire to win a championship has been questioned.

"LeBron is getting all the credit and none of the blame". But it clearly took LeBron by surprise that the biggest interview Griffin had about the Pelicans since trading Anthony Davis and drafting Zion Williamson would turn into a referendum on his leadership, legacy and immediate future.

LeBron James is through with people playing with his name. Griffin said he will continue adding players if the postseason is within reach this coming season.
