USA immigration: ICE arrests almost 700 people in MS raids

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Wednesday that its officers had raided seven food processing plants in MS and detained approximately 680 "removable aliens" in what a federal prosecutor described as "the largest single-state immigration enforcement operation in our nation's history".

CNN reports: 'US immigration authorities arrested about 680 undocumented immigrants at seven sites in six different cities in MS on Wednesday.

ICE said it has made more than 2,300 criminal and administrative arrests related to workplaces in the 2018 fiscal year, which ended in September, compared to just over 300 in the previous year.

Agents arrived at the Morton plant, passing a chain-link fence with barbed wire on top, with a sign that said the company was hiring.

He did not say why they were let go except to say those released at the plants had been let go due to "humanitarian factors".

Officials had said Wednesday that they would release detainees who met certain conditions, such as pregnant women or those who hadn't faced immigration proceedings previously.

A report at Fox News details that around 600 ICE agents raided the various food processing plants as part of the operation.

Videos and photos showed agents arriving in buses to question and arrest the people.

A few workers tried to flee on foot but were captured from the factory premises.

The arrested were taken to a military hangar for questioning on immigration violations.

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement official said Wednesday that search warrants were executed at seven locations across the state targeting several companies.

Last year, the Trump administration raided a meatpacking plant in eastern Tennessee.

Another plant raided Wednesday was in Canton, Miss., and is owned by Peco Foods Inc., based in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said "approximately 680 removable aliens" had been detained.

The largest single state immigration enforcement operation in the USA history took place on August 7.

In Morton, 40 miles east off capital Jackson, workers filled three buses at a Koch Foods plant. Workers' wrists were tied with plastic bands and they deposited personal belongings in clear plastic bags.

Koch Foods didn't respond to telephone calls and emails seeking comment.

Trump resumed workplace raids, but the months of preparation and hefty resources they require make them rare.

'This will affect the economy, ' Maria Isabel Ayala, a child care worker for plant employees, said as the buses left. However, President Barack Obama's regime avoided them barring a few local audits.
