Arteta: Arsenal transfer plans affected without Champions League

The Gunners face the real possibility of no European football at all next year and the financial ramifications that would entail.

Nevertheless, despite the club seemingly not securing a Champions League spot this season, the club believes that sponsorships should help soften the blow financially. "We have to learn and react as a team and as a club". Arteta said planning has already begun for several eventualities and emphasised the need for clear thinking.

While some managers now downplay the importance of the world's oldest senior knockout football competition, Arteta remains fond of the FA Cup, having twice won it as as a player with Arsenal.

Earlier this week, Aubameyang responded to claims on Twitter that he will leave if Arsenal fail to qualify for the Champions League, tweeting: "Why they talk about what they don't know".

"It will be hard but this is the situation we are in now. We're in that situation because we haven't performed as well as the other top four clubs have been doing".

'The damage caused by the club not being in the Champions League for the third season is really big, ' admitted Arteta.

It may not bring in the riches the Champions League does, but it still provides a much-needed revenue stream which could strengthen a squad that is in desperate need of a rebuild.

Such factors could influence Arsenal's business in the summer and Arteta admits there will be no margin for error if money is tight.

Arsenal have missed out on Europe's elite club competition for three consecutive seasons and the Spaniard added that a fourth could also have a big financial impact.

Arsenal is the seventh in the Premier League.

In the fourth minute of injury time, an Arsenal corner was cleared to Ceballos, who played in England Under-21 worldwide Reiss Nelson to cross for Sokratis to turn home with a fine volley. Mikel Arteta's boys will go up against Portsmouth in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Monday night.

Just as it seemed the Premier League side would make it into the next round they conceded a late corner.

So a post-Olympiacos hangover is not an option.
