Blast targets United States embassy in Tunis, attacker dead

The local Radio Mosaique FM said that five police officers were wounded.

The bombings in the capital, Tunis, injured four other policemen and a civilian, in an attack the ministry blamed on "terrorists".

Police and firefighters gather at the scene of an explosion near the USA embassy in the Tunisian capital Tunis March 6, 2020.

Newsweek spoke to an official inside the embassy soon after the attack, but they declined to comment.

Police taped off the area around the blast site, which was littered with debris.

Lawmaker Yosri Dali, head of the armed forces and security commission, confirmed eyewitness reports that the bombers were on a motorcycle. An individual riding a bike detonated the device near the police patrol opposite the embassy, reports said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. The flag of the United States could be seen fluttering in the background.

An attack at the capital's Bardo museum in March 2015 killed 21 foreign tourists and a security guard.

The country has also struggled to contain the expansion of jihadists, with a significant number of nationals joining groups like ISIS and al Qaeda. It sometimes clashes with security forces there, but is regarded as having been closely contained.

"The attack indicates that the security challenge remains a major challenge in Tunisia", local security analyst Ali Zarmedini said.

The US embassy, in a residential area on the outskirts of Tunis, was attacked in 2012 by crowds angered by an anti-Muslim film produced in the US. State news agency TAP reported that one policeman was killed.
