Coronavirus quarantine hotel collapses in China, leaving 70 trapped

An unknown number of people were trapped after a hotel collapsed in Quanzhou City, southeast China's Fujian Province around 19:30 BJT on Saturday night.

No reason for the collapse was given.

About four hours after the collapse, the Quanzhou municipality said 38 of the 70 or so people who had been in the Quanzhou Xinjia Hotel had been rescued.

There have been 29 people rescued, with almost 150 firefighters involved in the rescue effort, according to reports.

It wasn't immediately clear why the building collapsed.

People's Daily, China also posted a video showing rescue workers searching through the rubble in an effort to rescue those trapped in the debris.

"I was at a gas station and heard a loud noise".

Rescuers work at the site of a collapsed 80-room hotel building in Quanzhou city.

At least 37 people have so far been rescued from the rubble of the Xinjia hotel in coastal Quanzhou city, the emergency management ministry said.

It was being used to quarantine people who had traveled from Hubei province and other areas.

She said that they had arrived on Feb 25 and had been scheduled to leave soon after completing their 14 days of quarantine.

"I can't contact them, they're not answering their phones, she said".

The hotel opened in June 2018 and utilized rooms between the fourth and seventh floors, Beijing Youth Daily reported. The five-story hotel, which Chinese health officials had converted into a temporary coronavirus quarantine center, had isolated dozens of potentially infected people for the past month.

The incident happened at around 7 pm in China's Fujian province.
