Trump says he would rather have cruise ship passengers stay on ship

Former Diamond Princess cruise ship passenger Jerri Jorgensen said her advice to Americans is to not panic.

The number of cases from the new coronavirus topped 100,000 worldwide as the United States battled to contain an outbreak on board a stranded cruise ship where 21 people have tested positive.

Meanwhile, New York declared a state of emergency as more than 2,700 New Yorkers have been asked to self-quarantine in the New York City area.

Health authorities in Egypt also reported 12 new cases among workers aboard a Nile cruise boat.

Trump earlier signed a bill that will provide $8.3 billion to bolster the country's capacity to test for coronavirus and fund other measures to stem an outbreak that has now killed 15 Americans.

Vice President Pence acknowledged a shortage of tests on Thursday, saying, "We don't have enough tests today to meet what we anticipate will be the demand going forward".

State Department of Health Director Bruce Anderson said the agency wants to begin survey tests of people who have respiratory illnesses to see if any of them might have a case of unrecognized COVID-19.

But the number of cases outside the epicentre rose for a third consecutive day, fuelling fears about imported cases being brought into the country from overseas. At a news conference Friday, Ige announced that the state has its first confirmed case of coronavirus.

The capital of Tehran alone has the most infections, with more than 1,500 cases, followed by the Shiite holy city of Qom with 668 and the northern Mazandaran province with 606 cases.

The death toll in the US from the coronavirus rose to 17 on Friday, as the impact of the outbreak continued to have a knock-on effect across the country.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is working on the same process for passengers who live outside the state.

In addition to the 11 people who have died at EvergreenHealth, two people have died elsewhere in Washington state and one person in California has died.

Samples were collected from 45 people Thursday, according to Princess Cruises.

David and Sally Abel both need three negative test results in order to leave hospital and though both had twice been found negative Mr Abel's final test came back positive.

"Four people are well and are outside the isolation period and they pose no risk of Covid-19".

And in Malta, which reported its first case of the virus Saturday, the MSC Opera ship agreed not to enter the Mediterranean country's port - even though there are no infections confirmed on board.

Governments have imposed restrictions on visitors from China, South Korea, Italy and Iran.

In China - where the virus first emerged late past year - the number of new cases reported Saturday nationwide was the lowest in weeks.

Sne Patel, president of the LahainaTown Action Committee, said on Friday afternoon that residents and businesses are concerned about the virus, especially for the elderly, who have higher rates of fatality from COVID-19. "This is a time for pulling out all the stops".

There have now been 60 confirmed imported cases brought into the country.

The challenge is not an entirely new one: Ships have previously been affected by other diseases, such as norovirus, which causes vomiting and diarrhea and can spread quickly in the close quarters of a ship and among passengers with weakened immune systems. Japan has also taken the unusual step of closing all schools for the month of March to protect children.
