U.S. state of California goes on coronavirus lockdown

U.S. state of California goes on coronavirus lockdown

We do think there was an ability to do this without shutting down the entire state.

Out of the 13,322 confirmed cases in the U.S.at the time of this post, 894 of them are located in California.

Governor Gavin Newsom's directive, effective immediately, marks the largest and most sweeping government clampdown yet in the worsening public health crisis brought on by the COVID-19 outbreak, which he predicted could infect more than half the state within eight weeks.

In a press conference Thursday, Newsom said that residents should leave home for essential activities such as getting food or taking care of family and friends.

"I don't believe the people of California need to be told through law enforcement that it's appropriate just to home isolate", he said.

Minutes before Newsom announced his statewide order, Los Angeles County officials ordered the closure of all shopping centres and non-essential businesses, and told its 10 million residents to avoid gatherings of 10 people or more. "Our state and health care delivery systems are significantly impacted by the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases", Newsom wrote.

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday said 60,000 homeless people could become infected.

The governor has now called on US President Donald Trump to deploy a Navy hospital vessel, the USNS Mercy, suggesting it be docked at a port in Los Angeles to help the sprawling metropolis keep up with the influx of new patients. "We will have social pressure that will encourage people to do the right thing".

This story has been corrected to show that Newsom said up to 20% of people infected by coronavirus, not 20,000 people, could be hospitalized.

"I order that Californians working in these 16 critical infrastructure sectors may continue their work because of the importance of these sectors to Californians' health and well-being", Newsom wrote in his order.

Under the order, Californians are required to stay home unless they seek "essential services" at gas stations, pharmacies, banks, laundromats. "It is a character test for us collectively as a society", said Cuomo. The county order is in place until April 19 but could be extended, and the state order is in effect indefinitely. A message on its Facebook page said the store is now operating on an appointment-only basis and urged customers to call local police to protest the effort to close it.
