Washington state reports 7th coronavirus death

Washington state reported four more deaths from COVID-19 Monday, bringing to six the deaths from this highly-contagious disease since Saturday. The number of infections in the US overall climbed past 100, scattered across at least 15 states, with 27 cases in Washington alone.

Coronavirus infections are now reported in ten states in all: Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Florida.

Eight of the 14 cases, and four of the deaths, in King County are linked to one care facility. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said the coronavirus "poses evolving risks to economic activity".

The newly revised tally includes two people who died in the Seattle area last week and have since been found to have had the coronavirus, the health department in King County, Wash.

Tests later determined he died of COVID-19.

"Unfortunately, we are now starting to find more COVID-19 cases in Washington that appear to be acquired locally", Lofy said.

Messonnier said that they are working on medications and vaccines to fight the virus.

The New York Times, which first reported the case, said the patient was a resident of the same nursing facility in Kirkland, Washington, that's seen a number of cases and deaths.

Seattle is effectively in the position that Wuhan was on January 1, when it first recognized it had an outbreak of a new virus, but did not realize the scale of the problem or the speed at which the virus was spreading, Bedford said.

The remaining cases have been isolated and are being treated, although several are in critical condition, according to reports. The new case involves a person who had just returned from a cruise from San Francisco to Mexico.

Public Health - Seattle and King County announced Tuesday that it has confirmed that three more patients have died in the county as a result of the coronavirus.

The genetic sequences of patients in the Seattle-King County region suggest the virus has been circulating there since about mid-January, when the first USA patient - a man who returned from Wuhan - was diagnosed, Bedford wrote in the analysis, published online. The first and second American death from COVID-19 both happened in Kirkland a suburb of Seattle.

"We are grateful this individual is recovering", said Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel.

He said "the entire country has entered a war against an infectious disease".

"The fear factor is still very high", said Kirk Hartman, president of Wells Fargo Asset Management.

Worldwide, more than 92,000 people have been sickened and 3,100 have died, the vast majority of them in China.

Constantine said the county was also deploying modular housing, some of which had been recently used to house Texas oil workers, to house homeless people who would need to be isolated.

Hundreds of passengers from South Korea arriving in eastern China last week were placed in isolation after people on two flights were discovered to have fevers.

As of Sunday night, a worrying total of 87 cases of coronavirus had been identified in the United States.

"Like the Chinese people, the Iranian people are now fighting the novel coronavirus, in a race against time", the Chinese embassy in Tehran said in a statement to Weibo on Monday, adding that there had been 1,501 and 66 deaths in the country and that the human toll in the country was heavy.
