‘We’re at war’: Donald Trump calls in National Guard to coronavirus hotspots

During a White House news conference Sunday evening, Trump specifically mentioned California, New York and Washington state, those hardest-hit so far, and said National Guard troops would help set up medical stations and distribute hundreds of tons of masks, gowns, respirators and other supplies. The state governors will retain command of the National Guard.

President Trump says it's up to states to try to get the materials first.

Trump said he has ordered eight, large federal medical stations with 1,000 beds for NY. FEMA Chief Peter Gaynor insisted that the use of the National Guard in these states is "not martial law".

The president added that the U.S. naval hospital ship USNS Mercy will be deployed to Los Angeles.

NY tops the list with more than 15,000 confirmed cases, with an escalation of over 5,400 cases in 24 hours alone, followed by Washington state at about 1,700 and California comes in third with roughly 1,500 positive cases.

He added that he had approved one for Washington state as well and would do the same for California "very shortly".

And he gave his best regards to U.S. Sen.

California, New York and Washington state have been essentially the most affected states amid the pandemic, which has escalated considerably in US over the previous week.

But Trump said the US economy will "skyrocket" when the country wins what he calls the war against "the hidden enemy". For New York, that would mean another 1,000 hospital beds.

In the USA, there have been over 31,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, which causes the disease COVID-19.

In addition to funding, Trump's approval redistributed the Army's massive hospital ship, the USNS Mercy, to Los Angeles to aid the state's medical infrastructure.

"We have large quantities of medical equipment and supplies on the way to those states".

"That will give us regional coverage in downstate NY, which is our must heavily impacted area", Cuomo said.

Hospitals are scrambling for protective equipment for healthcare workers and for ventilators as they brace for a wave of patients who will need help breathing as severe cases often lead to pneumonia and decreased lung function. Trump said the ship has "tremendous capacity".
