Alberta sending "surplus" coronavirus medical supplies to other provinces

Alberta sending

In a Saturday afternoon press conference, Premier Jason Kenney evoked an Easter message of "do unto others as you would have them do unto you".

"I want to stress for my fellow Albertans that we are absolutely confident that these contributions will in no way undermine our capacity to provide critical protective equipment and ventilators to Alberta's medical professionals, to other associated frontline workers, and to care for those in need of it".

Alberta will begin shipping the supplies next week.

Alberta is expanding its eligibility for COVID-19 testing to anyone with symptoms of the illness.

Ontario will receive 250,000 N95 masks, five million procedural masks, 15 million gloves, 87,000 goggles and 50 ventilators. "Going forward, testing all symptomatic Albertans will give us a more complete picture of trends over time".

He said the province was looking beyond the disagreements in order to save lives, but said he hoped other provinces wouldn't forget the gesture later.

"Even with all the expansions, we still have the capacity to do more testing", said Hinshaw.

The province now has 274 deaths after 21 were reported today. There are now 47 patients in hospital, with 14 in intensive care units. Currently, the province has 314 ventilators and 1,935 hospital spaces, with plans to increase both those numbers.

He also credited Alberta's early pandemic and planning for the surplus in supplies, as well as its buying power that he says comes from the provincial health system's central administration.

"Our goal is to reduce the risk of severe disease experienced by individuals and reduce the burden on the health-care system by helping people recover from the effects of the virus at home", said Health Minister Tyler Shandro.

"It is working, demonstrably".

Kenney says hospitalization has been relatively stable this week. "The most important number to watch is the hospitalization and ICU number, because that's the ultimate indication of how many people have contracted COVID for whom it has really challenged their health".

Based on that modeling, with current supply stockpiles and more shipments on the way, the Alberta government says it will retain enough of each of the PPE items to maintain an adequate supply.

"I assure all Albertans that we will have ample supply".
