At least six dead in USA state of MS after tornadoes

Moderate is four out of five on the NWS' severe weather scale.

The National Weather Service office in Jackson told residents to brace for the possibility of long-lasting tornadoes, wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour (113 km) and tennis ball-size hail through Sunday evening. Doppler radar confirmed a large and destructive tornado was hitting parts of the city.

The city of Monroe, La., said the storm damaged commercial buildings and homes in multiple neighborhoods.

The south of the United States is now facing a tremendous thunderstorm system bringing tornadoes, strong rains, heavy winds and hail across Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

An outbreak of severe thunderstorms was likely Sunday from Louisiana through the Tennessee Valley, the National Weather Service said. If a local public shelter is open, experts recommend that people take refuge there despite coronavirus concerns. If you have to be outside or travel today, please use extreme caution.

SEVERE WEATHER SAFETY: Take time before the storms to prepare. Some storms are expected to be severe, with damaging wind gusts as the primary threat.

Excessive rain is not expected, but some local street flooding and other flash floods are possible beginning Sunday afternoon, according to the forecast.

Most other areas will receive 3 to 6 inches.

A powerful storm system will get closer tonight, spreading in steadier rain this evening.

By Monday, the system will focus on the East Coast. The threats of damaging wind, tornadoes & hail extends from TX to KY & western GA. These are the ones that are more likely to be strong to severe. However, they're not intended to wake people up; they're meant to alert people who are outdoors that they need to go inside as quickly as possible.
