Bernie Sanders Endorses Joe Biden for President

"Today I am asking all Americans, I'm asking every Democrat, I'm asking every independent, I'm asking a lot of Republicans to come together in this campaign to support your candidacy, which I endorse", Sanders said, "to make certain that we defeat somebody who I believe, and I'm speaking just for myself, now is the most unsafe president in the modern history of this country".

Biden and Sanders, a leading progressive, clashed throughout the primary over policy issues such as the "Medicare for All" universal health care plan.

With social distancing in widespread effect, Mr. Biden has been forced to move the bulk of his campaign to online events and has watched as the global pandemic had relegated the 2020 presidential race to the back burner.

"This media chatter is ridiculous - President Trump is not firing Dr. Fauci", White House spokesman Hogan Gidley later said in a statement, insisting it was Democrats and the media who ignored the virus, not Trump.

"I am asking all Americans, I'm asking every Democrat, I'm asking every independent, I'm asking a lot of Republicans, to come together in this campaign to support your candidacy, which I endorse", Sanders said.

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Trump said some are "saying that it is the Governors decision to open up the states, not that of the President of the United States & the Federal Government".

Debate continued about when the shuttered USA economy might reopen but Donald Trump spent Sunday evening fuming - about a New York Times report which said his public health advisers wanted social distancing to be implemented in February but were rebuffed and did not see it happen till mid-March.

Biden and Sanders differed throughout the primary, particularly over whether a government-run system should replace private health insurance.

Sanders, 78, is sure to remain a force throughout the campaign.

All states allow some type of voting by mail but many come with certain limitations.

Still, Sanders and Biden emphasized their mutual respect for each other. Biden answered him repeatedly as "pal".

The two men appeared via livestream on split screens talking to each other.

According to the latest Fox News Poll of registered voters, released last week, Trump and Biden are now tied in the race for the White House with 42 percent support apiece.

He added, "With that being said, the Administration and I are working closely with the Governors, and this will continue".

Some progressive leaders were positive but guarded in response to Sanders' endorsement.

Trump can use his bully pulpit to pressure states to act or threaten them with consequences, but the Constitution gives public health and safety responsibilities primarily to state and local officials.

There is no doubt that numerous Bernie bros and sisses will be disgusted at the idea of throwing support behind any except their fearless leader but it is what it is.

Biden spoke back: "Bernie I want to thank you for that, and it's a big deal".

"This is further proof that even though Bernie Sanders won't be on the ballot in November, his issues will be". In doing so, he essentially paved the way for Joe Biden to clinch the Democratic nomination, much to the annoyance of those seeking a complete reshuffling of the deck.

Biden and Sanders on Monday emphasized the need to address the challenges confronting young people during the pandemic, with Sanders describing "a generation of young people who are experiencing crisis after crisis".
