Fans demand refunds from Ticketmaster on events affected by COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation or postponement of many events to help limit the spread of the virus, but a change to Ticketmaster's policy will only see customers refunded if their event is cancelled.

With the COVID-19 crisis causing concerts and other live gatherings to be halted, the giant ticket seller owned by Live Nation Entertainment is now offering refunds for only cancelled events and not those which are postponed or rescheduled by promoters. "However, the unprecedented volume of over 30,000 events impacted to date, coupled with continued uncertainty over setting new dates while awaiting clearance from regional governments, has led to event organizers needing additional time to reschedule their events before deciding to offer refund options".

The company announced today to NME that they are now offering full restitution. Ticketmaster is still giving refunds, but they're not making it easy. AXS, which provides ticketing services for the popular Sayreville rock club Starland Ballroom among others, says on its support website regarding postponed shows: "If your event has been postponed, hang tight as your tickets will automatically roll into the new date once confirmed".

But, he doesn't expect performers or fans to be dissuaded from future concerts or shows.

"Typically, event organizers have had the flexibility to offer refunds for virtually all postponed and rescheduled events".

Ticketmaster admits to changing the language on their website but says that the policy has always been the same.

"Given the unprecedented impact the coronavirus has had on the live events industry, we have adapted our policies in the USA and Canada while continuing to go above and beyond for our customers".

In yet another upset to concert goers, one health official estimated that large gatherings - including concerts, festivals, and sporting events - may not be able to resume until fall 2021.

"It's a pretty big process to go through and the volume is so huge", he said. These changes are effectively immediately as part of a policy change.
