UK Times: PM Johnson seeking to end reliance on some China imports

In January, after a prolonged and hard debate, the government chose to allow Huawei to play a role in 5G but to limit its market share to 35% of the network and keep it out of the most sensitive parts.

Johnson has instructed officials to draft plans that would reduce Huawei's involvement in building the U.K.'s 5G phone network to zero by 2023, the Telegraph reported.

As we said above, there are various problems between Huawei and the United States of America, and this decision of the UK will please the current U.S. government.

The UK's Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that the nation is seeking to end reliance on some China imports.

The new plan to reduce Huawei's involvement in the UK's 5G network brings the country in alignment with a position that the United States has championed for quite some time now.

Downing Street declined to comment on the reports but Johnson had flagged some new measures in the works to protect British technology in the wake of coronavirus in the House of Commons earlier this week.

He also prohibited the use of the company's equipment in the critical core of mobile networks where data is routed and stored.

Huawei has always denied that it would help the Chinese government attack one of its clients.

Beijing is being criticised for its handling of the outbreak of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) virus or coronavirus, which began in Wuhan, China.

Johnson is expected to use less reliance on China as a means to boost trade talks with US President Donald Trump in the aftermath of Britain's departure from the European Union, according to a newspaper.

Huawei stressed that the coronavirus pandemic had placed "significant pressure" on British telecoms systems and highlighted how many people in the country - particularly those living in rural communities - do not have good access to the internet.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Huawei official Victor Zhang said it was "pointless". The government plans to gradually stop using Huawei equipment on 5G networks.

The Trump administration has banned the government's use of Huawei technology, and the president signed an executive order last May that blocks USA companies from buying foreign-made telecommunications equipment that may pose risks to national security. Huawei's involvement at the time was capped at 35%.
