A woman places some flowers at the Abbey gateway of Forbury Gardens in Reading town centre. The same man reportedly also was charged past year with assaulting a judge who had sentenced him.

A large part of central Reading has been cordoned off by police on Saturday night in what has been described as a "major incident".

- A number of people were stabbed by a man in Forbury Gardens in Reading's town centre around 7pm on Saturday night.

"An horrific, terrible incident", policing minister Kit Malthouse tweeted.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was "appalled and sickened" by the attack in a park on Saturday evening.

Fellow counsellor Adele Barnett-Ward echoed the sentiment, tweeting: "Very concerning news coming in about a serious incident in Forbury Gardens #Rdg #rdguk".

However, a Reading man of the same reported name and age as the suspect was sentenced to two months in prison past year for assaulting an emergency worker, The Associated Press reported.

The attack took place at the site of a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest that was held in the town earlier in the day.

A BLM supporter said on Facebook the stabbings occurred a few hours after the protest had ended and people who attended the demonstration were unharmed.

"None of us are affected".

"I would urge the public to avoid the area at this time and thank the community for their patience".

"The park was pretty full".

One eyewitness, Lawrence Wort, told the BBC that groups of people were drinking and enjoying the park when a man suddenly started shouting and darting around a circle of about eight to 10 people.

He said it was "chaos" as police yelled at people to leave the area.

"Reading Council are in touch with the emergency services and will support them as necessary".

He told The Mirror he noticed the group because a man was running around the circle "tapping them on the head". But it was blood spraying out, ' said the witness.

Paramedic teams were seen trying to resuscitate the injured as they lay unresponsive on the ground.

Police said several people were taken to hospitals but did not confirm media reports that three people had been killed.

Police minister Kit Malthouse called the incident "horrific, dreadful" in a Twitter message.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said the stabbing was "very concerning".

The police stressed there was nothing to suggest the two were related. Last November another man who had been jailed for terrorism offenses stabbed two people to death on London Bridge before he too was shot dead by police.

Thames Valley Police (TVP) said in a statement on Sunday that the investigation into the attack, in which three people died, was being handed over to a counter-terrorism unit.
