Jennifer Hudson wowed during the 2020 BET Awards last night - in more ways than one. The trailer delves into Franklin's embracing of her confidence and her voice as a leading activist for civil rights.

Franklin, who in 2018 died of pancreatic cancer at the age 76, was a producer on the film. The film also stars Forest Whitaker as C.L. Franklin, Marlon Wayans as Ted White and Mary J. Blige as Dinah Washington. Liesl Tommy is making her feature film debut with "Respect".

"Respect" was originally scheduled for release on August 14 before being pushed to October 9 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The movie follows the rise of Franklin's career from a child singing in her father's church choir to her becoming an worldwide superstar.

Respect is one of two upcoming Aretha Franklin projects, the other being a National Geographic limited series, Genius: Aretha, which is set to star Cynthia Erivo as the Queen of Soul. It will then expand January 8, 2021 in theaters with a full-on wide release January 15, which is Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.
