With Coronavirus Surging, Governor Recommends Closure Of Ventura, Santa Barbara County Bars

In a tweet Sunday afternoon, Newsom announced his order and recommendations to stem a surge of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in the state.

The county has been on a state watchlist for 13 days, Ansorg said, because it has not been meeting several state reopening metrics, and officials are working with the California Department of Public Health to address that.

Bars in Los Angeles and six other Californian counties were ordered to close again on Sunday as parts of the United States reimpose shutdown measures to try to quell a surge in coronavirus cases.

The United States remains the country with the largest number of coronavirus cases (2,539,544) and the highest COVID-19 death toll (125,747), according to the latest data from the Johns Hopkins University. However, other factors keep the county on the watch list.

Beilenson said patrons are less likely to practice social distancing in bars, especially after they have had a few drinks. The seven counties being ordered to close their bars have been on the watch list for more than 14 days.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said Tuesday he's anxious about family gatherings around California ahead of the Fourth of July weekend and will announce new measures to dial back reopenings on Wednesday. "Covid-19 is taking control, and we need to take control back". She grew up in California and is a graduate of Northwestern University.

If that continues, "Santa Barbara County may be mandated to issue a health officer order to close bars given the rising case count locally", Ansorg noted. Of particular concern are local "positivity rates", or the percentage of COVID-19 tests coming back positive.

The governor and state health officials allowed bars to open in California on June 12.

Statewide testing capacity has increased in the meantime, he said, to a record of almost 106,000 tests on Sunday.

On Friday, Newsom said the numbers in Imperial County have been particularly alarming and have overwhelmed the region's hospitals. The other counties are: Fresno, San Joaquin, Kings, Kern, Imperial and Tulare. The number of infections has reached 223,000 in the state.

An additional 6,367 COVID-19 cases were reported across the state in the last day, according to the state. Alissa Anderson, senior policy analyst with the California Budget & Policy Center, wrote in the recent report.
