Guardiola fully focused on Champions League points

Into his fifth campaign in charge in Manchester, Guardiola has received fierce criticism for failing to get beyond the Champions League quarter-finals.

They could welcome back Gabriel Jesus for the visit of Olympiakos in Group C. The Brazil worldwide has been out since suffering a thigh injury in September but could return against the Greek side.

"Qualifying is the most important thing because every year there are important clubs (who do not)", said Guardiola. "He's getting better, but I don't know". We don't want (him) to make a step back again.

"I don't know about Liverpool, but I think after the global break he will be ready".

'We struggled a lot last season for the problems we had with Vincent Kompany leaving for Belgium and the injury to Aymeric, ' said Guardiola.

"He did one with the team [on Sunday]". You can not fake a step.

Aguero has sat out the last two games with a muscle problem and will also miss the Champions League clash with Olympiakos at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

"But we know we have to secure points at home".

Guardiola, who twice won the Champions League as Barcelona head coach, was appointed City manager with a remit to bring European silverware to the club.

"It's tough, really tough". It doesn't matter where you go. People don't believe it.

"It's hard, every game". And with the pandemic, the situation is more uncertain. 'It's a tricky competition.

"That's why I am delighted with what we have done so far and why we can not miss this chance". This is the target. Porto is a team that always has to win. Olympiacos the same. They have to win every single game.

'We did it in Marseille [in the last game] but now have to be sure that we can keep the points at home, so that is why now we have an incredible opportunity to make a huge step to qualify for the next round'.

The City youngsters, including Liam Delap, Taylor Harewood-Bellis, Cole Palmer and Tommy Doyle, kick off at 7.45pm tonight.

And he has not played for City since their win against Arsenal.
