Shooting near Vienna synagogue 'apparent' terror attack

Authorities in Vienna say at least one person has been killed and several more have been injured in the Austrian capital late Monday (NZT Tuesday) in what security officials described as a "terror attack".

Mr Nehammer said some people were thought to have been killed and the several seriously injured, including a police officer.

Several people carried out a terrorist attack in Vienna that resulted in multiple casualties, Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer told reporters.

One suspected attacker was possibly on the run, the ministry was cited as saying.

Police urged residents to stay indoors, keep off public transport and refrain from sharing photos or videos of the incident while it was unfolding.

"There are several injured persons", police said tweeted. We are increasingly on site with our resources.

Police added that the exact circumstances of the incident were still being determined.

A video is now circulating on Twitter showing the police in action and gunshots can also be heard, with some of the gunmen speaking Turkish.

French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted: "We, French, share the shock and sadness of the Austrians after an attack in Vienna".

The area where the shooting took place is a busy district packed with bars and restaurants, near Vienna's main synagogue, Seitenstettengasse Temple.

Kronen Zeitung reported that a man who attacked the synagogue in the center of Vienna may have committed suicide, but accomplices could still be at large.

Videos circulating on social media showed a gunman dressed in white walking along a cobblestone-covered street and shooting.
