Japan bans entry of foreigners after detecting United Kingdom virus strain

It is possible that a few cases of the new strain will be reported, especially as the first two known cases, a couple, had no known travel history, meaning that they acquired the disease from community spread.

The move comes amid mounting concerns over the spread of a new variant of the virus at a time when cases in Tokyo have reached new highs.

Serious cases were unchanged from a day earlier at 81.

The ministry on Friday reported its first cases of a new coronavirus variant identified in Britain.

The Japanese government said Saturday it will ban arrivals of foreigners from around the world from Monday until the end of next month.

The country has reported a national record of more than 3,870 new cases, marking the highest daily increase for the fourth day in a row.

His comments on Fuji TV's "The Prime" news program came a day after Japan said it will ban nonresident foreign citizens from entering the country, which has been seeing record daily numbers of coronavirus cases in recent weeks.

The new virus strain, first detected in Britain, has since been confirmed in more than 20 countries as well as in Hong Kong.

However, businesspeople and students from 10 countries including Thailand, Vietnam and South Korea, with which Japan has a special scheme to ease travel restrictions, will not be affected by the suspension policy, the government added. The nation's coronavirus death toll rose by 40 to 3,287.

The restrictions will be implemented on Monday, the government said in a statement. Germany, Switzerland and Ireland are among the nations that have confirmed the presence of the new variant in their respective countries.

Japan's health ministry had reported five people who had arrived from Britain were detected with the new virus strain which is believed to be up to "70 per cent" more infectious. She has been hospitalized since last Tuesday and no one had close contact with her. By subscribing, you can help us get the story right.
