Thousands without power, planes delayed as storm Bella lashes France

In France, the storm hit northern parts of the country, mainly in Brittany, Normandy and Hauts-de-France.

Across the Channel, almost all of France was under storm warning on Sunday, with winds up to 145 kph registered at the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and heavy rains and gusts lashing the Atlantic coast, according to the national weather service and utility services.

The regions of Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes and Bourgogne-Franche-Comte, as well as Alsace, were particularly affected, AFP news agency reported on Sunday evening, citing the network operator Enedis.

Some 34,000 households in the east and center of France were still without power as the storm made its way across the country.

The national meteorological service has issued a weather warning due to strong winds and high waves on the coast.

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE were without power last night after high winds and heavy rain swept across the country yesterday.

Gusts of up to 145 kilometers per hour (90 miles per hour) were measured at the top of the Paris Eiffel Tower.

Similar troubles were seen in the south of England where winds reaching 170 kilometres an hour were recorded on the Isle of Wight overnight Saturday to Sunday.

Snow had already fallen in parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and England by Sunday afternoon, while more than 100 flood warnings were in place across England following days of stormy conditions.

More than 1,300 families living near the River Great Ouse in north Bedfordshire were told to find alternative accommodation or evacuate to local emergency centres, with many receiving a knock on the door late on Christmas Eve telling them to leave the area.

Meanwhile, some 20,000 households in Wales had their electricity cut while delays were also seen on railways due to trees falling on the line.
