Trump, under pressure, signs US$900 bil Covid relief bill

His resistance had threatened to inject further chaos into the final stretch of his presidency.

A few hours after Biden's tweet, incumbent President Donald Trump signed the coronavirus relief bill, which will ensure that Americans receive government aid. "And if the president wants to come up with more money to help more people, terrific".

In a statement of his own, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., applauded Trump for signing the package, without mentioning any of Trump's demands. Many economists agree the financial aid in the bill should be higher to get the economy moving again but say that immediate support for Americans hit by coronavirus lockdowns is still urgently needed.

Lauren Bauer of the Brookings Institution had calculated that at least 11 million people would lose aid immediately as a result of Trump's failure to sign the legislation; millions more would exhaust other unemployment benefits within weeks.

But Trump has pushed for the $600 direct payments to United States taxpayers spelled out in the bill to be more than tripled, and argued the legislation included too much excess spending on unrelated programs. The measure also would fund the federal government through September 30, meaning that a shutdown would begin Tuesday without the president's signature or further congressional action.

Americans are living through a bitter holiday season amid the coronavirus pandemic that has affected 1.9 crore people and killed almost 3,30,000 in the United States, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

Aside from unemployment benefits and relief payments to families, money for vaccine distribution, businesses, cash-starved public transit systems and more was on the line.

Shortly thereafter, reporters began to share anonymously sourced reports that Trump signed the bill. U.S. gold futures gained 0.9% to $1,899.10.

"(But) we've been talking about this deal for a long time, so how much the market is going to follow through will be the big question".

"I think what we ought to do is sign this bill and then make the case".

The House will vote on Monday on legislation that would change the Dollars 600 in the coronavirus relief-government funding package to USD 2,000, an amount supported by Trump and Democratic leaders.

Kinzinger also called Trump's veto last week of a defense spending measure "nonsensical" and said he could not understand how Republican colleagues who supported the bill might now reverse themselves at the president's behest, making it impossible to override the veto.

But his late objections created turmoil because politicians had thought he was supportive of the bill, which had been negotiated for months with White House input.

Trump's signature of the $900 billion Covid relief package extends unemployment benefits for millions of jobless gig-workers and independent contractors, as well as the long-term unemployed.

The massive legislation was flown to him at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, where he's spending the holidays. They've been looking for a senator to join them in objecting, to force deliberation, which they pretend could result in the two houses of Congress somehow overturning the will of the people and giving Trump another 4 years in power.

Republican Senator Pat Toomey told "Fox News Sunday" that Trump should approve the bill now, then push for more unemployment money later.

The Senate will start the process for a vote that increases checks to $2,000, repeals Section 230, and starts an investigation into voter fraud.
