Pelosi says Congress will set up independent commission to examine Capitol riot

"To protect our security.our next step will be to establish an outside independent 9/11-type Commission to 'investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021 domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex.and relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power, including facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other Federal, State, and local law enforcement in the National Capitol Region". "And that we reveal how responsible and abjectly violated President Trump was of his constitutional oath".

A 9/11-style commission would continue the work of the House impeachment managers, who presented a damning case during Trump's trial about how the January 6 mob acted on his "fight like hell" command as they smashed their way into the Capitol, killed a police officer and disrupted the congressional certification of Biden's election. Pelosi has also tasked retired Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré with a review of Capitol security, and he has already recommended an increase in the allowance for individual lawmakers to spend on security.

Democrats say Trump, who held a rally urging supporters to "fight like hell", was to blame for inciting the crowd that smashed its way into Congress. Five people died in the attack, including a Capitol police officer. Graham has said he looks forward to campaigning with Trump in the 2022 election, when Republicans hope to win back a majority in Congress.

The House voted to impeach the president for a second time for his role in inciting violence that led to the pro-Trump insurrection at the U.S. Lindsey Graham, a Republican senator from SC and a staunch Trump ally, said the probe would be needed to better protect the Capitol from future intrusions.

"His behavior after the election was exaggerated", Graham said.

The Republicans who joined Cassidy in voting to convict were Sens. Seven Senate Republicans voted to convict the former president, joining all 50 Democrats in the upper chamber, but this ultimately fell short of the 67 senators needed for conviction. She added: "But, listen, we didn't need more witnesses". In a blistering speech after the vote, the Kentucky Republican said the president was "practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of that day" but that the Senate's hands were tied to do anything about it because Trump was out of office.

McConnell said he could not vote to convict Trump because he is "constitutionally not eligible for conviction" since he is no longer president.

House impeachment manager Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-Pa.), who also spoke on "This Week", alluded to the partisanship of Saturday's vote, saying a commission could avoid political infighting. House Democrats brought their impeachment case against him without an accompanying investigation - a reflection of the hurried, urgent nature of the effort given Trump's waning days in office. Sund said in a letter to Pelosi last month, the former Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving said he was concerned about "the optics" and did not feel the "intelligence supported it".
