Russias coronavirus vaccine Sputnik V approved for use in Mexico

Mexico on Tuesday approved Russia's Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine for emergency use in the country, one of the worst hit by the pandemic, following the release of positive trial results.

Aside from being used in Russia, Sputnik V was administered in countries like Argentina, Venezuela, Hungary, UAE, Iran and in Palestinian territories.

Meanwhile, the Gamaleya National Research Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology and the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) reported that interim results from the Phase III clinical trial of Sputnik V confirmed the vaccine's high efficacy and safety.

Unfortunately, because of the saturation of the hospitals and the phone lines, we are waiting about three or four hours before they can assign us a hospital, and to get there, said ambulance crew chief Eduardo Vigueras. On Tuesday, a second batch of the active substance in the AstraZeneca vaccine arrived in Mexico, where it will be packed and distributed through the rest of Latin America.

Palestine kicked off its COVID-19 vaccination campaign this week, with health workers the first to be inoculated.

No significant side effects happened, the paper added.

It joins the ranks of proven vaccines alongside Pfizer, Oxford/AstraZeneca, Moderna and Janssen.

It noted that the development of the Sputnik V vaccine has been criticised for unseemly haste, corner-cutting, and an absence of transparency.

The deal would provide Brazil 10 million doses of Sputnik V vaccine and 20 million shots of Covaxin and will be delivered in February and March.

The Russian COVID-19 vaccine is unique as it uses two different human adenoviral vectors for delivery of outer coat genetic material of the coronavirus to the human body.

The authors note that because COVID-19 cases were detected only when participants self-reported symptoms (followed by a PCR test), the efficacy analysis only includes symptomatic cases of COVID-19 and further research is needed to understand the efficacy of the vaccine on asymptomatic COVID-19 and transmission.

"We were the first, but we will probably not be the only ones in the European Union to do so, as we see statements from officials urging the study of the Russian and Chinese vaccines in Western Europe", Szijjarto added.

"The vaccine can be stored for eight months at a temperature of below 20C, and for a month at temperatures between +2C and +8C, making it accessible to the most hard-to-reach areas of the world", he said.

In some cases the figures were not revealed, while Argentina experienced a shipment delay last month. Hai Do was the editor.
