In a statement late on Thursday (Feb 4), the Eastern Theatre Command of China's People's Liberation Army said its forces had followed and tracked the ship.

China's Foreign Ministry on Thursday voiced resolute opposition to the sailing of a USA warship through the Taiwan Straits and urged the US side to play a constructive role in regional peace and stability rather than doing the contrary.

It has vowed to "out-compete" Beijing and endorsed a last-minute Trump administration determination that China has committed genocide against Muslims in Xinjiang, while also stressing the hope to cooperate on policy priorities like climate change.

"The U.S. move is an old trick of manipulating the situation in the straits".

Wu Qian, spokesperson of China's Ministry of National Defence, on January 28 "warned" the people wanting "Taiwan independence" and said that "those who play with fire will set themselves on fire, and seeking "Taiwan independence" means nothing but war".

Two Chinese Y-8 aircraft, one an electronic warfare plane and the second an intelligence-gathering aircraft, intruded into the zone off the southern end of the island.

The South China Morning Post described Yang as "the highest-ranking official so far to comment on the bilateral relationship since Biden's inauguration almost two weeks ago".

Last year, the US Navy conducted a total of 13 sailings through the waterway separating the Chinese mainland and Taiwan.

China claimed in December that its warships "expelled" the McCain from the strait during the Dec. 31 operation, prompting an unusual denial from the Navy. Yang said normal exchanges between China and the U.S. needed to be restored at all levels, including through the reversal of Trump-era policies such as the labelling of Chinese media outlets in the United States as foreign missions and the closure of Confucius Institutes at USA universities.

In a report published on Monday, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs said that most of the more than 900 surveyed opinion leaders - including executive branch officials, congressional staff, think tank scholars, academics, journalists and interest group representatives - favoured a United States military defence of Taiwan in an invasion scenario.

"There's been a strong and long bipartisan commitment to Taiwan", new U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told his confirmation hearing last week.
