Winter Storm Watch Already Issued for Lubbock on Saturday Night

Monday will be mostly cloudy and a few degrees warmer.

With these two storms affecting most of the lower 48 states, a lot of ice and snow is expected to fall this week from Washington to Texas and up to Maine.

"There (have) been numerous reports of accidents from icing recently", National Weather Service lead forecaster Bob Oravec said Monday.

The worst of the snow and ice is anticipated to arrive later on this evening. Ice accumulations from a quarter of an inch to a half an inch are likely across our entire area and power outages are likely. Much of Berkshire, Franklin and northern Worcester counties are expected to see 1 to 2 inches, with a pocket of 2 to 3 inches forecast in and around North Adams, according to meteorologists. Though accumulations will be light, any amount of freezing rain can cause hard travel conditions, especially on untreated and elevated roads.

A punch of colder air will move in Tuesday night into Wednesday. "Travel conditions could become extremely unsafe, and I've directed our emergency response personnel to get out ahead of this storm and help our local partners".

No one wants to lowball an ice storm forecast, Martrich said.

In Northern New Mexio, Chama got 13 inches, Taos Ski Valley got 10 inches, Los Alamos got 6 to 8 inches. More ice "isn't going to make the roads more unsafe". That would be great.

It predicts that temperature anomalies will be 25 to 45 degrees below normal for much of the Central and Southern Plains on Monday and Tuesday, with wind chill warnings and advisories stretching as far south as the Southern Plains and as far east as the Ohio Valley.

More than 300,000 customers are without power in Oregon. The overnight forecast low at the moment is 30.

In a Monday afternoon tweet, George Bush Intercontinental Airport announced it would be closed until at least 1 p.m. CST Tuesday and asked travelers to stay away from the airport.

"Ice is ice", he said.

The problem is that as the snowflakes in the clouds start falling, they're going to melt on their way down, and then that melted snowflake - a raindrop - will freeze on contact.

Thursday: Cloudy. A 20% chance of snow showers in the morning.

Areas shaded in dark purple are under an ice storm warning from Monday evening, February 15, through Tuesday morning, February 16, 2021.

We saw a wide variety of precipitation types from freezing rain, sleet, and even some snow that mixed in as well in spots.

Along with the unusual, widespread cold comes snow events that could also break records.

By the second week in March, he said, it should be warming up nicely.
