NYC Will 'Fully Reopen' On July 1, De Blasio Announces

It was not immediately clear how the mayor's plans would square with those of the state government, which has control over operating restrictions on restaurants and other businesses.

New York City is planning an official reopening on July 1, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced this morning on MSNBC, with Broadway gearing up for a September start. The mayor did not say if the mask mandate will remain in place. He said he hopes some smaller productions can open by July.

"The mayor said he expects retail stores and restaurants to reopen fully, and he expects tourists will flock back to the city". What we're seeing, people have gotten vaccinated in extraordinary numbers.

Asked about the governor's role, de Blasio told the hosts of "Morning Joe" that the state and federal governments "always have a say" but added, "What I'm saying is we here in New York City, we're ready to come back and come back strong".

"Help us out by going out and getting vaccinated if you haven't already, and it's free and it's all over the city and now we're doing walkups at sites all over the city", Hizzoner said.

"Every single day we are beating back COVID more and more, hospitalizations are down, we are just seeing a better situation every day", he continued. It has seen 923,953 COVID-19 cases and 32,461 related deaths as of Wednesday.

Cuomo also said the decision to lift the restriction is the result of lowered positivity rates that are the direct result of disciplined behavior and vaccination efforts.
