Premier Doug Ford isolating after close staffer tests positive for COVID-19

Police departments insisted they wouldn't use new powers to randomly stop pedestrians or motorists and doctors complained the rules focused on outdoor activities like playgrounds and golf rather than more unsafe indoor settings.

Elsewhere, Nova Scotia closed its provincial boundary today to non-essential travel from all parts of Canada - except Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador - as it deals with a spike in COVID-19 cases.

Ford said the measures had been brought in too fast in response to dire COVID-19 projections. "We moved too quick with having people being pulled over, per se, you call it carding, but I want to tell the people of Ontario, I've never, ever directed the police, I never have, I never will". Outdoor amenities were also shut down, including playgrounds and police and bylaw officers were granted temporary authority to stop people and request an address and reasons for being out of the home. But we moved too fast.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath quickly responded following Ford's virtual press conference, saying the Premier "chose to walk people into a catastrophic third wave", adding that his comments offered nothing.

Ontario's premier got emotional today as he apologized for a mistake and some leaders urged the federal government to tighten restrictions for travellers returning to Canada as rates of COVID-19 variants continue to surge across the country.

He said the province was trying to curb mobility in Ontario.

The province claims they were waiting to see if the federal government made changes to the program in the budget before deciding whether or not to take further steps.

His ministers have said a provincial policy would fill "gaps" in a federal benefit, including reducing wait times for funds, expanding eligibility, and providing time off to get vaccinated.

Local health officials have confirmed 20 new cases of COVID-19 in Northumberland as of yesterday (Apr 20). They recommended measures ensuring more people can work from home, increased workplace testing and vaccines targeting at the hardest-hit areas.

The government has been increasingly under fire for not implementing its own paid sick day program as Ontario's health-care system is struggling to combat the virus.

"You also need to know you won't lose your income".

The statement said members of the Premier's office staff who were close contacts of the person who tested positive will also isolate.

"Ford has the power to protect workers, and still, he refuses to enact paid sick days and prioritize essential workers".
