Three people are dead amid an active shooter incident in Austin, Texas

Austin Police are conducting a manhunt after at least three people were killed near an apartment complex.

Police said on Twitter that they were on the scene of an active shooting and asked nearby residents to shelter in place and avoid the area. On Sunday, police swarmed the area searching for 41-year-old Stephen Broderick, who is considered armed and risky.

Broderick is accused of shooting up an apartment complex near the Arboretum in northwest Austin before noon on Sunday.

"I'm truly heartbroken that a former Travis County Sheriff's Office Deputy is the suspect in such a horrific incident".

"We don't believe this was a random act", Sheriff Beth said.

The FBI and U.S. Marshals assisted local law enforcement in the search for Broderick, who fled before police arrived. "I'm especially grateful to the vigilant citizen who called 911 after seeing Broderick". He resigned after he was arrested past year on a sexual assault charge.

In Kenosha County, Wis., the sheriff's department said an individual would be charged with first-degree intentional homicide, with other charges to follow as the investigation continues.

He had an ankle monitor when he was released following the June 2020 charge, but it was later taken off.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Kristen Dark told the Austin American-Statesman that Broderick, a property crimes detective, resigned after the arrest. Both were active in the district, both academically and athletically, Duron said.

The newspaper also reports that Broderick's wife filed for a protective order and divorce shortly after his arrest. I thought someone had just fallen down or something. "I'm afraid that he might hurt me or my mom". Her mom Amanda Broderick was also said to be shot to death. "If he wanted to hurt someone, he would know how", Amanda said, according to KVUE.
