Which six states gained Congressional seats; which seven lost seats?

Nationally, the long-awaited announcement from the U.S. Census Bureau slightly reset the balance of power for the next decade in the House of Representatives and the Electoral College, where each state's share of votes is tied to its census numbers.

NY managed to avoid taking a bigger hit after the census count showed the state's overall population grew by about 4.2% from 19.37 million in 2010 to 20.2 million past year.

And the numbers reflect which states are growing in both population and power. If the state of NY had counted just 89 more people in the Census, he said, it would have vaulted over Minnesota to get the 435th of 435 House seats allotted.

NY congressional delegation will drop to 26 next year after the once-a-decade reapportionment process is completed.

Dropping from 14 House seats to 13 also will mean the boundaries of some districts will have to change.

OREGON - Oregon is getting a new congressional seat for the first time in 40 years, going from five House members to six. If New York had 89 more people in the census count, for instance, it would have kept its seat at the expense of Minnesota, officials said.

No New England states will gain or lose any Congressional seats as a result of the initial 2020 figures announced by the U.S. Census Bureau Monday afternoon.

New York's slow growth, however, means the state could see cuts in federal spending and aid over the next decade because some government funding formulas are tied to state population totals.

MONTANA - By gaining a congressional seat, Montana goes from having a single House representative to having two.

California is still the most populous USA state, according to the data, but because of population declines, it will lose a congressional seat for the first time in its history.

In the case of NY, it was a razor-thin shortcoming in the nationwide population count that caused the state to just barely miss out on maintaining its representation.

Census Bureau officials today had no immediate explanation today as to how NY managed to reverse the trend.

Only 7 seats shifted among states this year.

The Census Bureau will begin the additional activities needed to create and deliver the redistricting data that were previously delayed due to COVID-19.

The population totals also determine how many electoral votes each state receives for presidential elections. The loss of one seat reduces its House delegation from 27 to 26 members. That means NY will have 28 electoral votes in the next presidential election. That is the fewest number of congressional districts in Missouri since the 1850 census.

In Central New York, Tenney's district includes Madison, Cortland and Oneida counties, and the eastern half of Oswego County.

If it comes to fruition, there will be a renewed push to re-draw districts.

Republicans control 61 legislative chambers, compared to 37 that Democrats control, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Each of the existing 27 House districts in NY represents a population of more than 710,000 people. After redistricting, each New York House member will represent about 761,000 residents. But the state had "negative net domestic migration" - meaning more people were leaving the Golden State than moved there over the last decade.
