Asia, Americas look to the skies for ‘Super Flower Blood Moon’

Hundreds of people eventually filled the promenade, but their spirits were quickly dampened by the clouds after 7 pm, when the lunar eclipse was supposed to take place.

Super blood moons and lunar eclipses are a well-studied field, so scientists won't be able to extrapolate much from the phenomenon.

Some referred to the event as a "super flower blood moon", making reference to its apparent size in the sky, the abundance of blooms at this time of year and the moon's color during the eclipse. During a solar eclipse, the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, plunging our planet's landscape into a nocturnal darkness.

Residents of Japan were able to catch a glimpse of a total lunar eclipse on Wednesday evening for the first time in nearly three years, made extra special as it also coincided with the latest supermoon for the country.

The main event took place between 1111 and 1125 GMT - late evening in Sydney and pre-dawn in Los Angeles - when the Moon was entirely in the Earth's shadow.

Australian airline Qantas is putting on a one-off two-and-a-half-hour "Supermoon Scenic Flight" that will head east from Sydney over the Pacific for an unobstructed view of the southern sky.

"It's not as red as I thought. New Guinea also gets a good view". "I saw a photo and the Moon was very red, but now it's not that red", said primary school student Chui Yiu-chun, who was trying to catch a glimpse from the city's harbourfront.

"Europe and Africa and the Middle East are missing out completely, on this particular one".

"So tonight if there was an astronaut standing on the moon during the eclipse and looking towards the Earth, they'd see the dark Earth surrounded by all of the sunsets all at once, it'd be lovely sight".

Totality plunged the moon in a deep red glow, slightly warmer in color than the dark brown lunar eclipse of January 2019.

The moon is pictured above Jakarta on May 26, 2021, during a total lunar eclipse.

But so far no apocalyptic consequences have been recorded from these celestial shows and, assuming all goes well on Wednesday, the next Super Blood Moon is expected to take place in 2033.
