California transit worker kills 8, extending U.S. epidemic of mass shootings

The San Jose Mercury News and other media outlets identified him as Samuel Cassidy, 57, a maintenance worker at the yard.

"We're going to use everything we can and grab all the evidence we can", he said.

President Joe Biden was briefed on the shooting, and his staff continued to monitor the situation while keeping in close contact with local officials to offer any assistance needed, the White House said. The VTA is a public transit service that operates bus and light rail services in the Santa Clara Valley and employs about 2,000 workers.

On the scene, visibly upset Governor Gavin Newsom praised the first responder hero and addressed the difficulty of dealing with yet another mass shooting.

"His temper was ... one of our biggest problems", his ex-wife, Cecilia Nerms, told CBS News.

"Several times during the relationship he became intoxicated, enraged and forced himself on me sexually", said the former girlfriend, who CNN is not naming and is reaching out to for comment.

Bagga Singh's cousin Taptejdeep Singh was one of them.

The ninth victim, Alex Ward Fritch, 49, died late Wednesday after he was taken to the hospital in critical condition, the medical examiner's office said, according to NBC Bay Area.

Police and Santa Clara County Sheriff's agents received multiple 911 calls around 6:30 am. The documents were obtained by The San Francisco Chronicle.

Mr Singh's brother-in-law, P.J. Bath, another light rail operator at the VTA, confirmed that the shooter and Singh were in different buildings initially but said nothing on the victims being pre-decided by the killer. On Wednesday, technicians from the bomb squad were also looking for explosives at the suspect's house. Authorities scrutinized the facility all day to make sure there were no explosives on the premises.

The VTA shut down rail service at noon as the search by the bombers continued.

Cassidy is listed as the owner of a house 13 miles away that ignited around the time of the shooting.

It took firefighters about an hour to extinguish the two-alarm fire, which caused heavy damage and left the structure uninhabitable, the fire department said.

A number of weapons and "hundreds of rounds of ammunition" were found inside his home, the sources said. Authorities described some items as "bomb-making materials".

"There's a sameness to this, and that numbness, I think, is something we're all feeling", California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in San Jose, after mentioning other recent shootings in the state.
