"A lot of it has to do with the percentage of people being vaccinated".

Slavitt said the CDC will continue to update guidance for businesses, travel, summer camps and more, but it wanted to put out its conclusion that fully vaccinated Americans no longer need to wear masks in most cases.

"If you are fully vaccinated, you should feel very comfortable being around your children who aren't vaccinated without you having to wear a mask", said Besser. Andrew Cuomo said late Thursday.

An order signed by President Joe Biden also remains in effect requiring masks for domestic and worldwide travel.

Still, Biden warned that the country was not in the clear yet and that too many Americans were dying of the virus.

Marc Perrone, president of United Food and Commercial Workers' union, told CNN that the CDC guidance was "confusing" and "fails to consider how it will impact essential workers who face frequent exposure to individuals who are not vaccinated and refuse to wear masks".

"It's important to note that all guests two years of age and older who are not fully vaccinated must wear face coverings during their visit, except while eating or drinking", the statement said.

Still, some people say they aren't ready to ditch the masks quite yet.

As the CDC announced the new rule, the atmosphere at the White House began to instantly change. "Yes", Biden shouted as he kept walking, with his back to the camera. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and actress Jennifer Garner took their masks off during a trip to a high school in West Virginia following the announcement. The CDC also cautioned that global travelers arriving in the USA are still required to get tested for COVID-19 within three days of their flight regardless of their vaccination status.

'In New York, we have always relied on the facts and the science to guide us throughout the worst of this pandemic and in our successful reopening, ' Cuomo said.

A survey released in April by the Birmingham Business Alliance showed that 51% of Birmingham-area businesses surveyed plan on continuing to require employees to wear face masks once the order is over, with 49% saying masks will be gone.

"Look at the smiles on other peoples' faces", Biden said.
