Ontario extends stay-at-home order to June 2

Ford says for the time being Ontario will need to continue with virtual learning and starting May 31st, youth between 12 and 17 can get first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

"While we are seeing positive trends as a result of the public health measures put in place, we can not afford to let up yet", said Ford in a news release. "If we stay the course for the next two weeks, and continue vaccinating record number of Ontarians every day, we can begin looking forward to July and August and having the summer that everyone deserves".

While progress is being made on reducing pressure on hospitals and lowering case counts, Mr. Ford said, the province needs to stay the course for now.

Checkpoints were also set up at interprovincial border crossings.

From May 5 to 12, the number of patients with COVID-related critical illness in intensive care has also decreased from 877 to 776. The main indicators have been better than the provincial average.

The provincial government announced it will extend its stay-at-home order until at least June 2.

Based on the above data, the government says it has chose to extend the stay-at-home order until at least June 2, but that the impacts of shutdown meaures "will continue to be evaluated over the coming weeks, with consideration being made to the reopening of outdoor recreational amenities on June 2".

The impact of the public health measures will be evaluated in the coming weeks. "Experience from other jurisdictions shows that driving transmission to very low levels is needed in order to end the third wave". Big box stores can stay open with strict safety measures in place, but only for essential items.

Mr. Ford said there needs to be "consensus" from medical experts and teachers' unions before classes can resume.

The premier also said people as young as 12 will be able to start receiving the vaccine by May 31.

"Unlike in the past, we are in a different reality, we are in a vaccinated reality", he said.

In the Porcupine Health Unit, cases have been surging in recent weeks.

The stay-at-home order and an increase in daily vaccinations have improved the circumstances across Ontario with lower daily COVID-19 case counts and positivity rate.

"With the new, more contagious variants continuing to pose significant risks, the Ontario government, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, has extended the Stay-at-Home Order until at least June 2", the government said in a statement.
