Pfizer expects Covid vaccine demand for years

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is preparing to authorize Pfizer Inc and German partner BioNTech SE's COVID-19 vaccine for adolescents aged between 12 and 15 years by early next week, the New York Times reported on Monday, citing federal officials familiar with the agency's plans.

"We are now discussing with the Indian government an expedited approval pathway to make our Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine available for use in the country".

On Monday, the authorities said they will ramp up the vaccination campaign by importing more vaccines before June amid concerns over a tight supply, which caused the nationwide rollout to lag.

USA media reported Monday that the United States is expected to allow the administration of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine to children 12 and older, starting next week.

"This is the first vaccine authorized in Canada for the prevention of COVID-19 in children and marks a significant milestone in Canada's fight against the pandemic", she said.

Pfizer said it was expecting "durable demand" for the vaccine, in a similar way to flu vaccines. It was given the regulatory green light in December 2020 and was the first COVID-19 vaccine to be administered in this country.

Health Canada said it will require Pfizer-BioNTech to continue providing information to it on the safety, efficacy and quality of the vaccine in this younger age group to ensure its benefits.

Since the start of the pandemic, about 20% of all Covid-19 cases in Canada were recorded in people under the age of 19.

More than a third of Canadians have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and Canada is on track to receive at least 10 million vaccines this month alone.

Other manufacturers of the four vaccines authorised in Canada - the others are AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna - are conducting or planning their own studies in children as young as six months old. With almost 11 million doses sent to Canada to date, Pfizer has committed to sending more than two million doses per week, each week, until end of June.

Demand for Pfizer's Covid vaccine could bolster its revenues for years, the USA drugs giant has said.
