Romney booed while on stage at Utah GOP convention

Senator Mitt Romney was booed in front of a crowd of more than 2,100 Utah Republicans at the party's state convention Saturday, but delegates ultimately rejected a motion to censure him for his votesto impeach former president Donald Trump.

"Liz Cheney is a woman of strength and conscience", the ME senator said. "And she did what she felt was right".

Many in the crowd cheered as Romney implored: "Let me tell you something, if we divide our party, we're going to be a losing party".

"You can boo all you like", said Romney.

Derek Brown, Chairman of the Utah GOP, eventually stepped in and told those in the audience to be more respectful. The resolution alleges that Romney "consistently publicly criticized" Trump and that those comments "not only hurt President Trump's reelection but hurt other Republicans on the ballot". "My dad was the governor of MI and I was the Republican nominee for president in 2012", Romney stressed as boos "flew from the crowd like so many poison darts", according to the newspaper.

During his remarks on Saturday, Romney acknowledged that "I have a few folks who don't like me terribly much, and I'm sorry about that".

The crowd settled as Romney continued. "But I express my mind as I believe is right and I follow my conscience as I believe is right". My dad was a governor of Michigan; my dad worked for Republican candidates that he believed in.

Despite the negativity, Romney ended his speech on a positive note.

'We need to come together in strength and unity, ' he said.

Senator Susan Collins, who also voted to convict Mr. Trump, said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union" that she was "appalled" by the booing.

'This was a process driven by Democrats who hated Trump, ' Guymon said.

Other Republicans who voted to convict Mr. Trump have also faced blowback from their local parties as the GOP grapples to deal with Mr. Trump's influence over the party.

It was the latest example of tension among Republicans over the party's direction after last year's electoral defeat of Mr Trump, who remains popular among conservatives.

Romney doesn't face voter repercussions in an impending re-election race like Murkowski in 2022, but his critical stance against Trump following the January 6 Capitol attack was nothing new.
