Body of missing boy, 8, recovered from lake near popular beach town

The body of an 8-year-old boy who had gone missing Saturday afternoon in Turkey Point, Ont., was found after nearly a full day of searching the waters of Lake Erie, according to provincial police.

Sanchuk says further details will be released when they're available and declined further comment Sunday, "out of respect for the dead and his family".

Ed Sanchuk announced on Twitter that the boy had been found deceased at about 2:45 p.m.by members of the OPP's Underwater Search and Recovery Unit.

The search resumed on June 6, 2021 with the assistance of the Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU).

The boy was found about 200 yards (182 metres) off the shore of Cedar Drive.

Provincial police said they were called to an area near Turkey Point around 5:30 p.m. Saturday for a missing person's report.

Sanchuk thanked the OPP's Norfolk detachment, OPP Aviation Services, the Norfolk Marine Unit, paramedics, firefighters, and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre for their help. Officers received information that the female had fallen off a floating device while in the water and did not make it back to shore.

They say that family members contacted them after they were unable to locate him.

Crews spent the night searching the lake for the child and that search will continue today.

"It's an eerie feeling", Simon said.
