Husband ‘confesses to killing’ British wife Caroline Crouch, Police say

The husband of Caroline Crouch, a 20-year-old British woman, has confessed to killing her at their home in the Athens suburb of Glyka Nera last month. "I blurred, I killed her and then I staged the robbery", he told police investigators.

However, reports indicate that helicopter pilot's tale fell apart after police discovered a fitness watch on Caroline's wrist - which showed her heart had stopped beating hours earlier than he claimed.

"The perpetrator is her 33-year-old husband, who confessed to his act".

He claimed that he struggled but was overcome and tied to a chair while the mystery assailants robbed the home and killed his wife, leaving the couple's infant daughter screaming beside her mother's body. Police had issued a 300,000 Euro (£262,000) reward for information.

The police announced on Thursday (17 June) that new evidence had come to light and that Mr Anagnostopoulos had been brought in for questioning after attending a memorial service on the island of Alonissos, where Ms Crouch grew up.

So after the memorial service for the victim was held on the island of Alonnisos, Anagnostopoulos was escorted by a homicide division group back to the Attica police headquarters in Athens (GADA) for additional testimony.

The mayor of Alonissos, Petros Vafinis, told newsit.gr: "The police were very discreet and there was no disturbance at the memorial".

A strangely impassive Anagnostopoulos returned to the property later on the day of the attack and gave a statement to waiting media.

Mr Anagnostopoulos had told police he was tied up by three robbers, while a fourth stood guard, who put a gun to his child's head, strangled his wife, and then got away with £10,000 in cash.

Apostolos Skrekas, a Hellenic Police spokesperson, refused to elaborate on whether Mr Anagnostopoulos had acted on his own or hired accomplices when probed by local reporters.

When officers arrived at the couple's home they found the couple's 11-month-old daughter Lydia hitting her dead mother in an attempt to wake her up.

He had previously described the murderer as tall, dark-skinned, overweight and under 30 years old.

"I wish no-one ever goes through what we went through last night".

"We begged the thieves not to harm us". We asked them not to hurt us.

"They will be caught".
