India to ease lockdown rules as Covid-19 case numbers decline

India has the world's second-largest number of coronavirus infections after the USA with total cases of 28.8 million, according to health ministry data. More daily recoveries than daily new cases have been reported for 23 consecutive days.

India reported 114,460 new COVID-19 cases, 189,232 discharges, and 2,677 deaths in the last 24 hours, informed the Union Health Ministry on Sunday.

Active Covid-19 caseload in India declined to 14,77,799 on Sunday as 1,89,232 patients recovered from the coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours.

This is the lowest number of cases reported in the last two months. The daily positivity rate further dipped to 5.78 per cent, less than 10 per cent for the 12th consecutive day, the ministry said.

With more than 22,600 tests completed across the province, there were 115 new cases in Toronto, 112 in Peel, 59 in Niagara and 47 in York Region, Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted.

In closely watched indicators, the seven-day rolling average per 100,000 population was 31.9, the per cent positivity of testing was 3.5 and the reproductive number was 0.86.

There were three new deaths reported Saturday, bringing the toll to 577.

"We are approaching the date on which it was supposed to happen and if it's going to happen early, it would have to be sometime very soon", Tory said.

The Union Health Ministry has informed that almost 22,78,60,317 vaccine doses have been administered so far under the nationwide vaccination drive. The number of cases for any city or region may differ slightly from what is reported by the province, because local units report figures at different times.
