Kenney, Shandro offer clarity on Alberta’s COVID-19 vaccine lottery

Officials say they are exploring winning options for those who are under 18 years of age and have been vaccinated.

The "Open for Summer Lottery" is being implemented to encourage more Albertans to get vaccinated.

"But we also know that there are lots of people who want to get vaccinated or are thinking hard about it but they just haven't taken the plunge yet".

Though this is a unique idea, Alberta is not the first province to give incentives for getting a vaccine in Canada.

About 68 per cent of eligible Albertans have their first COVID-19 shot and the province estimates that we could hit the 69 per cent mark by the end of the day Monday.

Alberta's government makes a step forward in its vaccination process as the province is hopeful to see more locals get a shot.

"We need to beat the virus once and for all", he said, noting the program is being instituted to ensure widespread immunity and it benefits every Albertan.

Dr. Stephanie Smith, an infectious disease physician at the University of Alberta Hospital, characterized it as a gimmick.

Albertans must register once at Alberta.ca/lottery to be entered into the three draws.

Kenney said there's been a dropoff in the past 10 days of first doses administered and bookings being made.

The second prize, which will be drawn from people who have both of their vaccine doses, will be drawn in August. Currently, with 60,429 first-dose appointments booked over the next seven days, Alberta is projected to hit the target on Friday, .

Registration closes a week after 70 per cent of eligible Albertans have received a first dose and the victor will be drawn when Stage 3 of Alberta's Open for Summer Plan begins, roughly a week later.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney hopes the $3 million COVID-19 vaccine lottery will get the attention of those who are yet to get the first dose.

3rd draw at the end of September will close September 23.

It is that group of people who can put the province over the 70 per cent benchmark and move the province to Stage 3 of Open for Summer.

Draws are also to be held and the victor announced August 31 and September 30 for people who are fully vaccinated.

Nearly 69 per cent of eligible Albertans have received one or both doses of the vaccination. 3 Million Dollars is up for grabs in separate million dollar draws, plus additional prizing.
